Why URLs are encoded
Links may only contain a limited set of characters. Spaces, letters outside English and symbols such as & or ? are written as %XX codes (percent-encoding). That is why a link with Arabic, Chinese or Russian words can look like a long row of % signs.
Which mode to use
- Component: encodes everything except letters, digits and - _ . ~ — use it for a single query value or a path part.
- Full URL: keeps the structure characters (: / ? # & =) and only encodes the rest — use it for a whole link.
- “+” for spaces: the format used by web forms (application/x-www-form-urlencoded).
Reading a URL
The parser tab shows the protocol, host, port, path, hash and every query parameter decoded, which helps when you check tracking links, redirects or API calls.
Frequently asked questions
What does %20 mean?
It is an encoded space. Every %XX is one byte of the UTF-8 code of a character.
Why does my Arabic link look like %D8%A7%D9%84…?
Browsers encode non-English letters when copying a link. Decode it here to read it again.
What is the difference between component and full URL mode?
Component also encodes / ? & = and #, so it is right for a single value. Full URL keeps them so the link still works.
Can I decode a broken link?
Yes. Valid parts are decoded and broken % sequences are kept as they are, with a warning.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything happens on this page.
Can I see the query parameters of a link?
Yes. Use the “Parse URL” tab to list every parameter with its decoded value.
