When to crop a photo
Cropping removes distractions, improves composition and makes an image fit exactly where it will be used. It is one of the simplest ways to make a photo look more professional.
- Make a square 1:1 image for Instagram posts or profile pictures.
- Get a 16:9 image for YouTube thumbnails, presentations and website banners.
- Create a 9:16 image for stories, Reels and TikTok.
- Cut out a document, signature or detail from a larger photo.
- Remove an unwanted edge, object or person near the border.
Three ways to set the crop
- Drag the box to move it, and drag its corners or edges to resize it.
- Choose a ratio such as 1:1, 4:5, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 or 9:16; the box keeps that shape while you resize it.
- Type an exact width and height in pixels for forms and platforms that require a precise size.
- Use the arrow keys to nudge the box; hold Shift to move it faster.
Full quality and full privacy
The crop is taken from your original image at full resolution, not from the smaller preview, and phone photos keep their correct orientation. You can keep the original format or save as JPG, PNG or WEBP. The image is processed in your browser and is never uploaded.
Tips
- Follow the rule of thirds: the grid lines in the box help you place the subject.
- Crop before resizing so you keep as much detail as possible.
- After cropping, use Compress Image to make the file lighter for the web.
