When to password-protect a PDF

Choose a good password

Use at least 10 characters mixing words, numbers and symbols, and share it through a different channel than the file, for example by phone or text message instead of the same email.

Strong encryption on your device

The PDF is encrypted with AES-256 by qpdf, a trusted open-source engine that runs inside your browser. Neither the document nor the password is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How strong is the protection?

The file is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest standard for PDF files, supported by all modern PDF readers.

What if I forget the password?

The file cannot be opened without it and we cannot recover it, because the password is never sent to us. Keep a copy of the original file.

What does blocking copying and editing do?

Readers that respect PDF permissions will not allow copying text or changing the document. Opening and printing still work with the password.

Is the original file changed?

No. A new protected copy is created; your original stays as it is.

Can I protect a file that already has a password?

Remove the old password first with the Unlock PDF tool, then protect it again.

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. Encryption happens in your browser; neither the file nor the password leaves your device.
