How VAT is calculated
Adding VAT: VAT = net price × rate, and total = net price + VAT. Example at 15%: 100 + 15 = 115.
Removing VAT from a price that already includes it: net price = total ÷ (1 + rate). Example: 115 ÷ 1.15 = 100, so the VAT is 15.
A common mistake
Do not subtract 15% from a gross price to remove 15% VAT: 115 − 15% = 97.75, not 100. Always divide by 1 + rate, as the calculator does.
Rates and rounding
- Quick buttons for common rates; type any other rate, including decimals such as 7.5.
- Results are rounded to 2 decimals, as on invoices.
- Works the same for VAT, GST and sales tax.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add 15% VAT to a price?
Multiply the price by 1.15. For 200 the total is 230 and the VAT is 30.
How do I remove VAT from a total?
Divide the total by 1 + the rate. For 230 at 15%: 230 ÷ 1.15 = 200.
Why is subtracting 15% wrong?
Because VAT was calculated on the net price, not on the total. Subtracting 15% of the total removes too much.
Can I use any tax rate?
Yes, from 0 to 100%, including decimal rates.
Does it work for GST and sales tax?
Yes. The maths is the same for any percentage tax added to a price.
